How exactly the oil industry lobby the Mineral Management Service? For oral you get to drill within 150 miles. Oral AND cocaine will get you within 100 miles. To get within 50, you've to pull what is called the "Greasy Sanchez".

fringe + typography

My twin/friend/Gêmulo has been telling me about the new FOX show "Fringe", which debuted on September 9th. I'm not a big fan of shows like CSI, X-Files, or even Lost, but I decided to give this one a chance since he's been talking about it non-stop.

I have to admit that I'm still not completely sold when it comes to the plot. I have, however, been pleasantly surprised by the typography treatment of the location IDs they have created. They are not just a small detail on the bottom of the screen, or some white type on black. The letters are handled as actual massive forms that are part of each opening scene. I would watch the show just to see how that approach evolves.

But only if you're a little bit in love with me

and that is why I love her

Advice from my friend Abi via IM on what to do about a specific topic of my life:

i think you should say "mr. mustache, i realize that you have MANY issues, but if you want to work something out with me you need to make it your goal to get your shit together. I think you're really great, but i think i'm more awesome."

"look at this blue" – the most exciting place in science"

A nice 11' video explaining the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

There are many theories as to what will result from these collisions, but what is certain is this: a brave new world of physics will emerge from the new accelerator, as knowledge in particle physics goes on to describe the workings of the Universe. For decades, the Standard Model of particle physics has served physicists well as a means of understanding the fundamental laws of Nature, but it does not tell the whole story. Only experimental data using the higher energies reached by the LHC can push knowledge forward, challenging those who seek confirmation of established knowledge, and those who dare to dream beyond the paradigm.

highschoolfriends

Everyday I spend here I'm given a new reason to believe that coming back was a good decision. I'm regaining so much of my past, I'm remembering things I hadn't thought about in almost a decade. Turns out I haven't changed that much in a lot of ways.

"I missed your laughter"
, she said. "You still laugh the same way you used to. A good laughter". The girl on the right has no idea how happy that made me, especially after 10 years without seeing her. She remembers a part of me that I had forgotten.

Sometimes I feel like one lucky girl.

email exchange with my brother in law

I sent him an email telling him for the 25th time this week to start using Twitter. I'm always pushing him to be as "virtual" as I am and join every social network I am part of. His response:

If I join all those mechanisms, I can't work;

If I can't work, I can't pay the bills of our house;

If I don't pay the bills, your sister and I will have to move to a third floor apartment with no stairs;

Then, with less space, we'll argue more;

With more arguing, less babies;

Less trips;

Less love.

The internet is against love.

happy end

um poema feliz
seríamos nós dois
caminhando feito bobos
de risos e galáxias
com passos de dança
numa rua sem gravi
dade somos dois
astronautas
indo comprar pão

Eu ando apaixonada por Alice

what it's [really] all about

the only thing i will remember you by

I do not care what car you drive, where you live, if you know someone who knows someone. If your clothes are this year's cutting edge. If your trust fund is unlimited. If you are A-list, B-list or never-heard-of-you list. I only care about the words that flutter from your mind. They are the only thing you truly own. The only thing I will remember you by. I will not fall in love with your bones and skin. I will not fall in only with the places you have been. I will not fall in love with anything but the words that flutter from your extraordinary mind.

go see

i would be scared too

I'm not a big fan of celebrities trying to express their opinions on politics. I would usually put this video under the "thingsthatannoyme" category here, but I happen to agree with everything he has to says. It's a scary thought the idea of Palin becoming president. And this should be brought up lot more often.

i feel the same

Fuck politics. I just want to burn shit down.

i'm embarrassed but i must tell

Below is the screen shot of the summary of a lawsuit filed with a Electoral Court in Brazil. The site might be down because the huge number of visits today's incident caused:

"PT, BRAZIL WORKERS PARTY (the President's party!), WANTS TO TAKE TWITTER OFF THE AIR.

The Story
Somebody created a fake profile of Luiziane Lins, one of PT's candidates standing in the election for Mayor of Fortaleza, Ceará. She filed a lawsuit in order to remove the profile from Twitter – which is a legitimate right she has.

But she went beyond.

As if removing that specific profile wasn't enough, she filed a lawsuit in order to TAKE TWITTER OFF THE INTERNET. That's right: the WHOLE site. Something like taking the whole MSN Instant Messenger system down, or even Facebook, Myspace or Orkut because of one fake profile.

Sickening.

To make matters worse, that lawsuit was combined with the lack of "internetical" knowledge of a magistrate, causing what we saw today: an approved order to take TWITTER OFF THE AIR.

The Absurdity

- The lawsuit asked the justice system to take the WHOLE site down, not just one profile;

- They approved such request;

- The Regional Electoral Court of the state of Ceará took off the air a BLOG WHICH SUBJECT MATTER IS TWITTER, not Twitter itself. It's bizarre not only that they actually went forward with the lawsuit request, but they also suspended a BLOG.

- Twitter is not a national site. Because of that, the order of the Court in Ceará will never reach its servers. Just like it happened with Youtube once in Brazil, maybe the "solution" is to determine that EVERY SINGLE NATIONAL INTERNET PROVIDER should remove forwarding service to Twitter's URLs - check out the size of the problem."

Beautiful, huh? Being from here is so fucking embarrassing sometimes.

on my way to see the legend

Excuse my absence and my negligence with this blog lately. Things have been busy but good. Tomorrow I'm flying to Salvador, one of the most wonderful places I know. I'm going to see Joao Gilberto's concert tomorrow night, and that in itself is reason enough to be excited. If you know Bossa Nova at all, then you should know about him. I'm staying until Monday, and hopefully I'll be able to go to the beach, eat some shrimp, drink some beer, and all that good stuff. Just to remind you: it's winter here now. How awesome is that, huh???

Well, It's 2:06am now and I need to be at the airport by 8, so gotta go.

More and more I'm finding out that my idea of what a designer is does not align with the general concept of what a designer is in Brazil. Here, a designer is what I personally would call a "graphic artist". Someone who sits in front of a computer and creates tangible things, deliverables, websites, etc. It does not mean in any way a person who is involved with the thought process and planning stages of a project. Being a designer usually means you're a "doer" - the color-picker, the font-chooser - not someone with power of decision or influence as a "thinker".

This morning I went to a conference by someone I personally would consider a designer, Ligia Fascioni (sorry, link is in portuguese). She gave a fascinating lecture on corporate identity and branding. Her background is pretty unique: she graduated then got her Masters, both in Electrical Engeneering, went to grad school for Marketing, then got her PhD in Design Management (not literally translated, but in a nutshell). And more than once she mentioned that she was not a designer. She was just a person who became increasingly interested in the subject of marketing and design, and became academically then professionally involved with the industry.

My point is - what would you call a person like that? Someone who clearly has an innovative perspective, someone who has the ability to take a situation and turn it into an improved one, by observing, studying, planning, and directing efforts? Isn't that design?

++++++++

The other day I was reading this post and a comment left by someone named Ricardo Aum caught my attention. I don't know who this person is and I have no idea about the quality of the work he produces, but I couldn't help but think he had some strong (and controversial) points:

- Creativity without planning is art, and art doesn't have to sell anything but itself.
- Planning does not mean censoring ideas. Rather it exists as a north, in order to guide creativity so that it can achieve a specific goal.
- If you can just draw but can't plan, you are a doer.
- Account exects tend to give the creative department chewed-up ideas because, the fact that a lot of creatives think they are really good, does not mean that they actually are.

In other words, because of creatives who think that all they have to know is how to draw, it is necessary for other people to do the "thinking" for them. (...) I have worked with a lot of creatives who think they are "it" and are incapable of calculating a percentage. Yes, that is stupidity, a very specific kind of stupidity of which one can't be proud of.

++++++++

Today, after the lecture, I wanted to grab the microphone they were passing around and raise the issue. Why is it that you don't call yourself a designer, when in actuality you are the mind behind the whole process - you are the planner, the north, the creative director. The others, the ones who create the layouts, who give your ideas a tangible state, those are doers. And here they often separate themselves from the rest of the industry. They don't understand why, for instance, I want to learn more about social networking, usability, information architecture, management, communication, finances, marketing, psychology, statistics, research... Why would I want to do that? "Aren't you a graphic designer? Is that really your business?"

I have encountered that line of thought way too often here, and it's frustrating. Because it also comes from people who are out there actively working in the industry as we speak. I want to know it all, I want to be able to manage change, and to do everything as well as I can possibly do. The kind of professional who is ready for whatever comes because I have the ability to think and to use the tools that are out there available to all of us, including them. A human being should always want to know more. Specialization is for insects.

wait until september - live 24/7

"To launch the the new german catalog of Ikea, the agency Nordpol debuted yesterday the project Warte bis Semptember (Wait until September) which streams live 24 hours a day a geman guy living in his empty house, just waiting the new line of furniture by Ikea.

Because the catalog will only be launched in September, the man will be there playing videogame, twittering, and hanging-up on people until next month. Yes! You can call him (+49 40 22 61 11 61), follow him on twitter (in german), put a widget on your blog, etc. The interesting part is that the project has been live for only a day and a half, and there's already plenty of people following him on twitter and calling the guy.

Another cool things is the widget created for blogs where the streaming happens live."

Must have cost a small fortune, but this is a beautiful example of how to step outside that lame beaten track of auto ads. Rendered in Maya. Music: "Ageless Beauty" by Stars. The name “Hello George” is a reference to George Jetson.

i like stupid

I'm not sure why his show ever got canceled, but maybe it's because the other 98% of the human race doesn't have the same idiotic sense of humor I happen to have. I used to LOVE the Andy Milonakis Show. The intro song was specially close to my heart.

i rock peas on my head , but don't call me pea head
bees on my head, but don't call me bee head
bruce lees on my head, but don't call me lee head
now please excuse me, i gots to get my tree fed
you wear name brand and i make my own clothing
i hang out with an apple who loves self-loathing
"i hate my self "

pancake on my face makes me extra happy
i like shampoo bottles that sit on my lappy
cause it's my show you can't tell me what to do
when life hands me lemons i make beef stew
see yo, i gotta go it's time for me to rock it
i put boloni in my left pocket
smear some cream cheese in my gold locket
cause it's my show, i'm andy milonakis
it's my show, i'm shmandy shmilashmockis
it's my show, i'm andy milonakis.
