i can appreciate good criticism

One of the very few feminine traits I can admit to having and not be ashamed of is being a humongous Sex and the City addict. Always have been, always will be. The new trailer for SATC 2 almost brings me to tears. Tears of happiness and nostalgia covered with very shiny glitter.

SATC has made me feel very free about wearing pretty absurd outfits on a daily basis. I wear dresses with pants, red high heels which are very contrasting to my very white legs, I even own a huge butterfly which I wear as a necklace feeling absolutely no shame. Seriously, I can look pretty ridiculous to others while feeling amazingly fashion foward to myself. However, I can appreciate (and agree) with a lot of the criticism I read about the series and, especially, about the movie.

To be honest, I was a fan of the TV show when it first aired. A female writer living in New York and dealing with messy relationships? Of course I could relate. Of course I was attracted to the glitter, the nightlife, the search for love and the dating psychodramas. ... But the movie made me want to cut myself. It was a showcase for how hollow and soulless these characters were. Do they have hobbies, aside from shopping? Interests? ... I was seriously offended when Charlotte wouldn't eat anything except packaged chocolate pudding on their trip because "It's Mexico." I was also offended by Miranda's rudeness to her nanny and Samantha's "Honey, we can pay people to do the stuff we don't want to do" attitude. Then it dawned on me: These women are assholes. [link]

jake and grandma talking about his new therapist

From Two and a Half Men:

Grandma Evelyn:
... and then I tried Freudian analysis but with them, you know, it's just sex, sex, sex...

Jake:
My doctor has a cow puppet.

Grandma Evelyn:
Oh, really? ... ... ... M.D or /PhD?

Jake:
C-O-W.

i had never seen anybody explain the concept of "intolerance" so brilliantly

"Maybe we need some time where we're walking around with a donkey with pots clanging on the sides. (...) How quickly the world owes him something he knew existed only ten seconds ago!"

web therapy with Lisa Kudrow

Web Therapy as the name might imply, is not another one-sided windbag borefest, it's -- hello -- actual two-way conversations that purportedly take place in real time (just 3 minutes per session!) over dual webcams between annoying psychologist Dr. Fiona Wallace (Lisa Kudrow) and her exasperated patients. One that makes sense that it occurs over webcams. The initial episodes of Web Therapy are terrific viewing, and really hilarious. It's the very first web series where I thought "I'd watch every episode" and that's really saying something. [via]

hey, john – i got a question

So McCain stood David Letterman up, claiming he's rushing back to Washington, "getting in a plane immediately", to save the economy (like "Economy" is a 20-some year old girl hanging from a building). In the middle of the taping David gets word that McCain was, in fact just down the street being interviewed by Katie Couric.

You don't suspend your campaign. This doesn't smell right. This isn't the way a tested hero behaves. I think someone's putting something in his Metamucil.

He can't run the campaign because the economy is cratering? Fine, put in your second string quarterback, Sarah Palin. Where is she?

What are you going to do if you're elected and things get tough? Suspend being president? We've got a guy like that now!

Hey John, I got a question – you need a ride to the airport?

dinossaur "love juice"

How exactly the oil industry lobby the Mineral Management Service? For oral you get to drill within 150 miles. Oral AND cocaine will get you within 100 miles. To get within 50, you've to pull what is called the "Greasy Sanchez".

fringe + typography

My twin/friend/Gêmulo has been telling me about the new FOX show "Fringe", which debuted on September 9th. I'm not a big fan of shows like CSI, X-Files, or even Lost, but I decided to give this one a chance since he's been talking about it non-stop.

I have to admit that I'm still not completely sold when it comes to the plot. I have, however, been pleasantly surprised by the typography treatment of the location IDs they have created. They are not just a small detail on the bottom of the screen, or some white type on black. The letters are handled as actual massive forms that are part of each opening scene. I would watch the show just to see how that approach evolves.

another brilliant moment of Craig Ferguson

"If Walter Cronkite could see these brain-dead morons yapping about flag pins and hair styles he'd turn over in his grave. Which is weird because Cronkite is alive and well and he lives in Martha's Vineyard... but if he were dead, he'd be furious!"

"Shame on you, you manipulative hypocrites. I'm talking to both sides: Obama, McCain, Palin, the other one... I'm talking to all of you."

"Are we so lost we have to be sold our own democratic right?"

i like stupid

I'm not sure why his show ever got canceled, but maybe it's because the other 98% of the human race doesn't have the same idiotic sense of humor I happen to have. I used to LOVE the Andy Milonakis Show. The intro song was specially close to my heart.

i rock peas on my head , but don't call me pea head
bees on my head, but don't call me bee head
bruce lees on my head, but don't call me lee head
now please excuse me, i gots to get my tree fed
you wear name brand and i make my own clothing
i hang out with an apple who loves self-loathing
"i hate my self "

pancake on my face makes me extra happy
i like shampoo bottles that sit on my lappy
cause it's my show you can't tell me what to do
when life hands me lemons i make beef stew
see yo, i gotta go it's time for me to rock it
i put boloni in my left pocket
smear some cream cheese in my gold locket
cause it's my show, i'm andy milonakis
it's my show, i'm shmandy shmilashmockis
it's my show, i'm andy milonakis.

the only gay in the village

A friend of mine who used to live in London told me about the show Little Britain, and he's always talking about the character "The Only Gay in the Village". It's absolutely hilarious.

Proud to be gay, Daffyd flaunts his sexuality in a variety of rubber outfits, to the villagers' complete indifference. He refuses to accept he's not the only 'gayer' in the village, and is outraged when fellow gays trespass on his patch.

finally – what sex and the city is really about

"Really great sit-coms, traditionally and broadly speaking, are very often about three stupid men. Sometimes the men think they are clever, like in Frasier. Sometimes, they have been abandoned on a remote island, where their stupidity can be contained, like in Father Ted. Often, their situational pecking order is in inverse to their intelligence, like in The Office. Sometimes, they have women around to keep them straight, like in Friends. But in Sex and the City, one of a few sit-coms that is entirely carried by four women, nobody is stupid, or even properly ditsy, like, say, Bubble in Absolutely Fabulous, in any way.

Maybe that's the joke. [...] Is there still a strain in the culture that struggles with the idea that intelligence isn't just wasted on girls? Why is it that a group of clever, ambitious and successful women, sitting around chatting about their tiny troubles, should be such a comedy goldmine?

It's because, isn't it, they're all bright enough to live life on their own independent terms, but still, despite their occasional protests, can't stop projecting their ideas about themselves and their status on to men? Yes – comedy genius – that's why Sex and the City is really about stupid men."

Read entire article here. Very enlightening, indeed.

charlie

"The one-on-one interview between Charlie and his guest begins as usual but quickly goes awry, so much so that Charlie is warned that, somewhere, a man named "Steve" is "not happy." Though this seemingly random statement might confuse us, Charlie understands it for what it is -- a threat."

a lesson to be learned

"There is something vertiginously strange about listening as Mr. Roberts, in his sing song voice, as he lectures the members of the US Senate...as if they were restive, not-very-bright, five year olds."

You've made this day a special day by just you being you? This is the song of individualism. And you thought that that was Walt Whitman's job? Nah. Well, it was Walt Whitman's job but then it fell to his perfect opposite: a gentle, caring man in a cardigan, no friend to wilderness, a creature domesticated and domesticating, a surrogate parent to the nation's young."

The subsequent congressional appropriation, for 1971, increased PBS funding from $9 million to $22 million.
