feeding my obsession with the prison subject

"In the late '90s, pop-culture historian Bill Geerhart had a little too much time on his hands and a surfeit of stamps. So, for his own entertainment, the then-unemployed thirtysomething launched a letter-writing campaign to some of the most powerful and infamous figures in the country, posing as a curious 10-year-old named Billy. (...)

As it turns out, no group hates to disappoint a child more than convicted killers, all of whom responded promptly to Billy's questions about dropping out of school. Their letters range from criminally insane to downright sensible, offering snapshots of the personalities behind some of America's most hideous crimes. Recently, Radar asked Billy to follow up with his mentors as a college student."

Pay Attention and Give a Shit

I'm creative. I should create at least as much as I consume.

It doesn't matter if someone gave me the responsibility or not, I should take it. If I could have made it better and it remains unchanged, I'm responsible for mediocrity.

Some people have the ability to put into words things I would never be eloquent enough to describe, even if I've felt it for a long time. Minus does that very often, and she makes it look effortless. That's one of the reasons I love her blog. She can talk about anything with so many details that makes it sound fascinating and familiar at the same time. I suck at that. If I didn't, I would actually "write" here as often as I'd like to. It consumes the hell out of me to translate into a post the ideas in my head. And it never quite comes out the way I hoped for.

+++++++++++++++++

I was reading Minus' blog today (which, by the way, has a sweet new design – way to go, Minus!) and I ended up at this post here by Randy Hunt, a designer and writer for Speak Up. It made me feel embarrassed for being such a queen of putting things off , for tapping myself on the back and thinking I'm doing so much when really I'm not doing that much at all. Or maybe not as well as I could. "I need to be effective, not efficient."

Sometimes a metaphorical ass-kick can do wonders for me.

charlie

"The one-on-one interview between Charlie and his guest begins as usual but quickly goes awry, so much so that Charlie is warned that, somewhere, a man named "Steve" is "not happy." Though this seemingly random statement might confuse us, Charlie understands it for what it is -- a threat."

represent!

Ok, so this is not new, but it's one of my favorites.

"They're like... what?! east coast, west coast!"

a lesson to be learned

"There is something vertiginously strange about listening as Mr. Roberts, in his sing song voice, as he lectures the members of the US Senate...as if they were restive, not-very-bright, five year olds."

You've made this day a special day by just you being you? This is the song of individualism. And you thought that that was Walt Whitman's job? Nah. Well, it was Walt Whitman's job but then it fell to his perfect opposite: a gentle, caring man in a cardigan, no friend to wilderness, a creature domesticated and domesticating, a surrogate parent to the nation's young."

The subsequent congressional appropriation, for 1971, increased PBS funding from $9 million to $22 million.

what separates us from apes

"I saw that he [chimpanzee greybeard] was picking little pieces of grass and using them to fish termites from their underground nest. Not only that, he would sometimes pick a leafy twig and strip the leaves - modifying an object to make it suitable for an specific purpose. The beginning of tool making. The reason this was so exciting and a breakthrough is that at that time it was defined that humans, only humans, would make tools. When I was in school, we were defined as "Men, the Tool Maker". So then, Louis Leavy, my mentor, heard this news, he said 'We must now redefine Men, redefine Tool or accept chimpanzees as Humans.' "

a truly whole mind

"Not only does Jill Bolte Taylor use the best stage prop I've ever witnessed in a live speech, but she manages to talk about left brain and right brain in a way that helps us understand the power of living with a truly whole mind."

"Neuroanatomist Jill Bolte Taylor had an opportunity few brain scientists would wish for: One morning, she realized she was having a massive stroke. As it happened -- as she felt her brain functions slip away one by one, speech, movement, understanding -- she studied and remembered every moment. This is a powerful story about how our brains define us and connect us to the world and to one another."

Got this tip from my brother. Click on the image to go play. (Use the arrows for left and right, space to jump, and shift to change contrast. Simple as that. Now go waste some of that precious time.)

my latest purchases

I just bought two amazing items at Etsy from Robyn, the vintage shopper behind Sirkus. Try not to be jealous.

1. This beautiful 1970s Japanese AM FM Radio from Panasonic. It still works.

2. This little guy right here, carved in wood (I guess once owned by Gerd, from Canada).
