"A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. “Hello George”

Must have cost a small fortune, but this is a beautiful example of how to step outside that lame beaten track of auto ads. Rendered in Maya. Music: "Ageless Beauty" by Stars. The name “Hello George” is a reference to George Jetson.

i like stupid

I'm not sure why his show ever got canceled, but maybe it's because the other 98% of the human race doesn't have the same idiotic sense of humor I happen to have. I used to LOVE the Andy Milonakis Show. The intro song was specially close to my heart.

i rock peas on my head , but don't call me pea head
bees on my head, but don't call me bee head
bruce lees on my head, but don't call me lee head
now please excuse me, i gots to get my tree fed
you wear name brand and i make my own clothing
i hang out with an apple who loves self-loathing
"i hate my self "

pancake on my face makes me extra happy
i like shampoo bottles that sit on my lappy
cause it's my show you can't tell me what to do
when life hands me lemons i make beef stew
see yo, i gotta go it's time for me to rock it
i put boloni in my left pocket
smear some cream cheese in my gold locket
cause it's my show, i'm andy milonakis
it's my show, i'm shmandy shmilashmockis
it's my show, i'm andy milonakis.

skype, you complete me

Just hung out with one of my best friends in the world and her little Layla for about an hour. On Skype, of course. I miss my friends terribly, and it's on days like these that I feel like getting on a plane and making my way back there as fast as I can.

Love you, E. We've been through hell and back together, and I'm so, so proud to be your friend.

political bullies

"From an anthropological point of view, teasing is a political act. It's part of the cultural construction on which democracy turns. Otherwise presidents are too grand, their powers too great, their status too asymmetrical. We scorn our politicians to level them. We tease to keep democracies democratic."

from the always lucid Grant McCracken

failed

Yeah, the whole "not blogging, no facebook, no MSN, no flickr" worked for about 3 days. Which is pretty ridiculous, if you ask me. I have done all the above plus more.

I'll try again in a few days. Please don't hate me.

Minus, you were right - WAY worse than quitting smoking.

still trying

I'm trying so hard to stay away but my mind is overflowing, so here it goes. I'm setting my priorities straight. The past three days have been wonderful and hard. Almost no talking; a lot of reading and thinking. Tons of doing. Crisis move me like nothing else.

Do I so worry you, you need to hurry to my side?
It's very kind
But it's to no avail;
I don't want the bail
I promise you, everything will be just fine...

zeca baleiro

Meu Amor, Minha Flor, Minha Menina

Sexo também é bom negócio / O melhor da vida é isso e ócio

Tanto que eu queria o teu amor / Tanto amor em mim como um quebranto
Tanto amor em mim, em ti nem tanto

------------

Pra que os trilhos,
se não passa o trem?
quando o amor tem mais perigo
não é quando ele se arrisca
nem é quando ele se ausenta
nem quando eu me desespero
quando o amor tem mais perigo
é quando ele é sincero

-- Cacaso

Isn't it terrible that I am in desperate need of a total vacation of this digital life but I just can't turn it completely off? How can a designer survive without being connected to this thing?

I'm going attempt to take it easy for about a week. No blogging, no facebook, no MSN, no flickr - NOTHING but what I absolutely need to do my job. We'll see how long this lasts.

Internet - I fucking despise you sometimes.

digital ethnography / the machine is using us

I find most of his videos very relevant, and if you're at all interested in a more anthropological perspective of how the internet has evolved you'll probably enjoy them as well. You can also find more interesting reads at the Digital Ethnography blog from the Kansas State University.

childhood memories

If there's one thing I can say about my childhood memories is that they are all filled with beautiful music. I remember being dragged to concerts with my sister by my parents, we were probably about 5 and 6 years old. We hated the thought of them, and we would ask my parents if we could play cards during the shows. But we always liked them at the end of the day, even if we hated to admit.

Because of those days, by the time we were teenagers we had already seen some of the best Brazilian musicians play live, and I know that that's one thing I want to do for my children. I wish everybody's childhood memories sounded as wonderful as mine do.

gotta go

I'm leaving for São Paulo tomorrow and I'll be back on Monday. I need to get away ASAP, to see different people, breath some new air and gain some sort of perspective. I hadn't stood still in one place for this long in quite a while, so getting away is almost a necessity right now. See ya'll when I get back. Hopefully in a much better mood.

Turns out letting go is exhausting. Whoever came up with "never give up" is either retarded, more patient or way stronger than me.

Got this "gem" from Wired's list The Five Stupidest iPhone 3G Accessories. Number 2 takes the gold in my book for the most environmentally irresponsible, useless, in-your-face-disgusting concept. Shame on you, Miniot.

"This ligneous shell costs nearly as much as the 8GB iPhone -- and rumor has it, it's fashioned from Ents! Optional wood dock sold separately. Seriously we're not making this up.

Grade: Chop down a tree to make an iPhone case? Great, I've got a car that runs on baby-seal blood and bald eagles you might like. Fail."

iWood Heritage takes the cake. As if "regular" iWood wasn't enough, Miniot is able to get their hands on some "very rare woods in small quantities that are only enough to create two or three iWoods." They even have ancient and pre-ice-age (!) wood. Wow. Because, you know, if there's one thing we should be doing with "prehistoric timber harvested from forests buried during the last Ice Age" is making iPhone protectors. RIGHT??

That, of course, comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. Which, by the way, should come with a nice plaque that says I AM OFFICIALLY A F*CKING ASSH*LE.

lame alert!

So Walmart (not Wal-Mart anymore!) is launching a new logo this coming fall.

Personally, I think it's lame. I can't stand their attempts to be more like Target and totally disregard for the fact that they still remain the most questionable place of employment and with the worst environmental and social practices.

But -hey, who cares?! Let's pretend we care and just change our logo!!

I was reading about the identity "revamp" here, and loved this comment:

We real cool. We

Lurk late. We
Strike straight. We

Sing sin. We

I hold my honey and I store my bread
In little jars and cabinets of my will.
I label clearly, and each latch and lid
I bid, Be firm till I return from hell.
I am very hungry. I am incomplete.
And none can tell when I may dine again.
No man can give me any word but Wait,
The puny light. I keep eyes pointed in;
Hoping that, when the devil days of my hurt
Drag out to their last dregs and I resume
On such legs as are left me, in such heart
As I can manage, remember to go home,
My taste will not have turned insensitive
To honey and bread old purity could love.

++++++++++

—And when you have forgotten the bright bedclothes on a Wednesday and a Saturday,
And most especially when you have forgotten Sunday—
When you have forgotten Sunday halves in bed,
Or me sitting on the front-room radiator in the limping afternoon
Looking off down the long street
To nowhere,
Hugged by my plain old wrapper of no-expectation
And nothing-I-have-to-do and I’m-happy-why?
And if-Monday-never-had-to-come—
When you have forgotten that, I say,
And how you swore, if somebody beeped the bell,
And how my heart played hopscotch if the telephone rang;
And how we finally went in to Sunday dinner,
That is to say, went across the front room floor to the ink-spotted table in the southwest corner
To Sunday dinner, which was always chicken and noodles
Or chicken and rice
And salad and rye bread and tea
And chocolate chip cookies—
I say, when you have forgotten that,
When you have forgotten my little presentiment
That the war would be over before they got to you;
And how we finally undressed and whipped out the light and flowed into bed,
And lay loose-limbed for a moment in the week-end
Bright bedclothes,
Then gently folded into each other—
When you have, I say, forgotten all that,
Then you may tell,
Then I may believe
You have forgotten me well.

Lies I've told my 3 year old recently

Trees talk to each other at night.

All fish are named either Lorna or Jack.

Before your eyeballs fall out from watching too much TV, they get very loose.

Tiny bears live in drain pipes.

If you are very very quiet you can hear the clouds rub against the sky.

The moon and the sun had a fight a long time ago.

Everyone knows at least one secret language.

When nobody is looking, I can fly.

We are all held together by invisible threads.

Books get lonely too.

Sadness can be eaten.

I will always be there.

The world is so huge that people are always getting lost in it. There are too many ideas and things and people, too many directions to go. I was starting to believe that the reason it matters to care passionately about something is that it whittles the world down to a more manageable size. It makes the world seem not huge and empty but full of possibility.

she's done me proud

That's Kira, my friend, sister, mom, on-call therapist, personal stylist, and so much more. Look at her little family. I met the girl when she was 17 and I was 19. We've been through hell and back together, and she's part of some of my favorite moments.

She's grown into a beautiful woman and one alpha mom. She's made me proud.

a couple of wonderful nights

The past couple of nights have been filled with things that filled my heart with pure joy and I could write two loooong posts about each here tonight, but I'm exhausted.

Last night I watched Wall-e: wonderful, beautiful, so, so meaningful. I plan on posting something about it here soon, but all I can say right now is GO WATCH IT.

Tonight I went to a "work demonstration" workshop of a brilliant Italian actor named Roberta Carreri. She and her husband, Torgeir Wethal, are part a really well-known avantgarde Danish theater group called Odin Teatret, and they are not only endlessly inspiring and great at what they do, but are also two lovely people.

One of my best friends from Brazil, Lala - who now lives in Paris - organized the event as a part of her doctorate program, so I was fortunate enough to be part of the whole experience. The presentation was brilliant - I never knew I could be so inspired by something like a "theater technique demonstration", but I had to try really hard not to cry a couple of times. Then we took them out to dinner, drank beer and cachaça, ate tons of brazilian food and laughed our asses off. I also learned about Roberta's daughter, Alice Carreri, who is a singer. I told Roberta I would "download her daughter" when I got home, and I actually found out she has a lovely voice and sings in three successful bands throughout Europe. She got stuff on Amazon and iTunes! Jeez!

Poor little me and the world-famous theater people. How great is it to have my friends??

songs that rocked my world today

I got this song as a gift today from this girl here, who is a friend of a friend and I hope we get to meet soon. We always like the same stuff, so she must really be just as awesome as me. Or maybe more.

Citizen Cope - Holdin' On

That made me remember another Citizen Cope song that I absolutely love:

Citizen Cope ft. santana - Sideways

And then I thought of this one. Just cause:

David Gray - Babylon

agreed. I might post something about this soon.
